Ciudadanos del mundo

Malinchismo: glorificación de lo extranjero y menosprecio por la propia nacionalidad. Nacionalismo: sentimiento fervoroso de pertenencia a una nación. Yo no soy fan ni de lo uno ni de lo otro. Es indigno para uno mismo renegar de sus raíces, pero enorgullecerse de la nacionalidad propia es un concepto que no termino bien de entender: nadie escoge el pedazo de tierra en el que le toca nacer, ¿cuál es el mérito de nacer en un país y no en otro como para enorgullecerse de semejante situación tan azarosa? Por otra parte, es muy fácil que el nacionalismo se convierta en chovinismo: exaltación desmesurada de lo nacional frente a lo extranjero. 

Los mexicanos nos creemos muy nacionalistas cuando defendemos al noble y ancestral indígena que fue arrebatado cruelmente de su tierra y su cultura por los malvados conquistadores españoles. Claro que las atrocidades imperialistas son reprochables, pero el rencor a los españoles me parece redundante hoy en día, cuando la gran mayoría de los mexicanos somos productos del mestizaje entre españoles e indígenas. El español está en nuestra lengua, en nuestra sangre y en nuestros genes, y por ello me resulta contradictorio renegar de aquello que nos constituye esencialmente. Pero más contradictorio aún es que este renegar de los españoles y alabar a los indígenas se vuelve un mero discurso panfletario cuando se defienden las culturas indígenas como nuestras principales raíces, pero a los indígenas actuales, los de la vida real, se les sigue relegando de la civilización; se ven muy monos en los libros de historia, pero que no se bajen de su cerro por favor.

Los mexicanos somos muy malinchistas cuando alabamos a los extranjeros y somos extremadamente serviciales con ellos aún a costa de nuestros propios paisanos. La cultura servicial de los mexicanos, heredada de nuestra condición de conquistados, se refleja muy bien en nuestra lengua; mientras que el español espeta campantemente un "¿qué?" que nosotros consideramos muy duro y violento, nosotros respondemos "mande usted" cuando se nos llama. Además, debemos usar el pospretérito el doble o el triple que los españoles, "me gustaría saber... sería tan amable de... podría decirme por favor...". Y decimos "gracias" para todo, aun cuando seamos nosotros los que estemos brindando algún servicio. Claro está que esta cortesía es meramente formulaica, no es que literalmente estemos poniéndonos de tapete de nadie cuando respondemos "mande". Además, basta ver la forma en que nos comportamos en el transporte público para inferir que esta cortesía no es más que pura pantalla lingüística. Para verdaderos corteses, chequen a los japoneses. 

Pero el malinchismo del mexicano se nota aún más cuando en la vida real la gente con características predominantemente europeas sigue siendo más favorecida que la que tiende más a una apariencia indígena o mestiza, aunque sea así la mayoría de la población mexicana. Incluso yo reconozco la ventaja que representa en muchas ocasiones ser güero y no prieto, y eso que los prietos son la mayoría. Por eso yo me asombro cuando me encuentro mexicanos y latinos defendiendo a supremacistas gringos o europeos, como Putin o Trump, cuando son precisamente estos tiranos prepotentes los primeros que nos miran feo y menosprecian por nuestra nacionalidad tercermundista. Un mexicano defendiendo a Trump me resulta casi tan irónico como un nazi judío o un negro racista. 

Me entristece mucho reconocer en nuestros días la tendencia en los líderes mundiales de perseguir políticas ultraconservadoras y divisorias donde disfrazan de nacionalismo su xenofobia. El caso del Brexit es un ejemplo decadente; a pesar de las ventajas que para los propios británicos significaba formar parte de la Unión Europea, han preferido dividirse y marcar su rayita en un acto francamente infantil. La primera ministra Theresa May, líder también del partido conservador, ha dejado en claro que sus medidas serán incluso más extremas de lo pensado; ya tiene mucha prisa por salirse de la Unión Europea y acabar con la libertad de circulación de europeos extranjeros en el Reino Unido. Por su parte, en las actuales elecciones a la presidencia de Francia, la figura de Marine Le Pen se ha alzado como otra fuerte voz conservadora que igualmente busca la ruptura con la Unión Europea de Francia y la culminación de todos los tratados internacionales posibles, como para hacer grande a Francia otra vez, muy al estilo de Trump. 

El terrorismo es, por supuesto, un elemento clave en este asunto. Es obvio que la gente le tenga miedo a los inmigrantes cuando el terrorismo islámico amenaza su seguridad. Es natural que quieran cerrar más sus fronteras para defenderse, pero ¿es que todos los inmigrantes deben de pagar por los conflictos de algunos cuántos? Y tampoco hay que negar la realidad; muchos de los conflictos del terrorismo han sido creados por estas mismas potencias mundiales que han causado la guerra y la división en los países del Medio Oriente. Los inocentes que sólo quieren escapar de la violencia y el terrorismo en sus países son las verdaderas victimas cuando los equiparan con los terroristas y les niegan el refugio. Por otra parte, los europeos se sienten ahora invadidos por los inmigrantes, pero es lo mismo que estos países hicieron en el pasado al invadir otros países; muchos de los inmigrantes vienen de países que estas potencias colonizaron y explotaron en primer lugar. Cuando Inglaterra se queja de los hindúes y Francia de los árabes yo no puedo sino pensar con un poco de malicia "¿quién les mandó a conquistar sus tierras en primer lugar?" 

¿Es que nunca podremos vivir en un mundo donde todos seamos ciudadanos del mundo, en vez de actuar como estos pueblerinos burdos, negados a salir de su propio aislamiento, cerrando más y más sus fronteras en lugar de abrirse al mundo? Qué clase de imagen más vergonzosa crean estos líderes ultraconservadores para sus países, dejando la Unión Europea, expulsando a los inmigrantes, aislándose del mundo y dividiendo sus propios países porque no soportan compartirlos con nadie que no sea de su pequeñito mundo provinciano. 

No importa, amurállense, regresen a la Edad Media, todavía hay algunos que sí queremos evolucionar en lugar de retroceder, y que más que fervorosos nacionalistas o traidores malinchistas, vemos en el mundo nuestro gran país y en todos los seres humanos a nuestros conciudadanos del mundo, y nuestro consuelo es tener fe en que todavía queden líderes que busquen la unión y no la división para no repetir los errores del pasado, los que cometes cuando te niegas a la comunicación, a la fraternidad y a la solidaridad con el resto de la humanidad.

Citizens of the world

Malinchismo: a Spanish word which refers to the glorification of everything foreign and disdain for one's own country. Nationalism: devout sense of belonging to one's own country. I'm not a fan of either the one nor the other. It is despicable for oneself to reject their roots, but feeling pride for one's own nationality is a concept that I don't quite understand: nobody chooses the piece of land where they happen to be born, what's the merit of being born in one country and not another to feel proud of such an umpredictable situation? Moreover, it's very easy for nationalism to become chauvinism: the excessive exaltation of one's nation against everything foreign.  

Us mexicans think we are very nationalist when we defend the noble and ancestral indigenous peoples who were cruelly snatched from their land and culture by the evil Spanish conquerors. Of course, imperialist atrocities are blameable, but holding a grudge against the Spaniards seems redundant nowadays, when most Mexicans are the product of the mixture of both Spaniards and Native Mexicans. Spanish is in our language, in our country and in our genes, and that's why, to me, it turns out contradictory to reject what makes us what we are essentialy. But it's even more contradictory that this rejecting of  the Spaniards and praising of the indigenous peoples become simple political rhetoric when indigenous cultures are defended as our main roots, but the current indigenous peoples, those of real life, are still relegated from civilization; they look very cute in History books, but it's better if they don't go down from their hills.

Mexicans fall into malinchismo when we praise foreigners and are extremely servile with them even at the expense of the people from our own country. Mexicans' servile culture, inherited from our condition of being conquered, is well reflected in our own language; whereas the Spaniard blurts out unconcernedly a "¿qué?" (what?) that we consider rather rough and violent, we answer "mande usted" (literally: order me) when we are being called. In addition, we probably use two to three times more often than the Spaniards courteous expressions like "I would like to know... would you be so kind as to... could you tell me please..." And we say "thank you" for everything, even when we are the ones doing some service. Of course, this cortesy is merely formulaic, it doesn't mean that we are literally bowing and scrapping when we say "mande". Furthermore, it suffices to see the way we behave in public transport to infer that this courtesy is no more than just a linguistic front. Want to see really courteous people? But Mexican malinchismo is even more noticeable when in real life the people with the most European features is still more favored than the people who tend to have a more indigenous or mestizo appearance, even though most of the Mexican population is like that. Even I recognize the advantage that represents in many cases to be güero (light-skinned) and not prieto (dark-skinned), even though the latter are the majority. That's why I'm amazed when I find Mexican and Latinamerican people defending American and European supremacists, like Putin or Trump, when these prepotent tyrants are the ones who look down on us because of our third-world nationality. A Mexican defending Trump turns out to me almost as ironical as a nazi Jewish or a racist black man. 

It saddens me very much to recognize that the current trend for world leaders is to pursue ultraconservative and divisibe policies where they disguise as nationalism their xenophobia. The Brexit case is a decadent example; despite the advantages that meant for the British themselves to be part of the European Union, they have preferred to be divided and draw their line in a frankly childish act. Prime Minister Theresa May, also the leader of the Conservative Party, has made clear that her measures will be even more extreme than expected; she's in a hurry to get out of the European Union and eradicate the freedom of movement of European foreigners in the United Kingdom. Likewise, in the current presidencial elections in France, the figure of Marine Le Pen has taken power as another strong conservative voice who also seeks to break with the European Union  and to culminate all international treaties, as to make great France again, in the purest Trump style. 

Terrorism is, of course, a key point in this matter. It's obvious that people is afraid of immigrants when Islamic terorism menaces their safety. It's natural that they want to close more their borders but, do all immigrants really have to pay for the conflicts of just a few? And we cannot deny reality either; many of the conflicts of terrorism have benn created by the same world powers who have caused war and division among the Middle East countries. The innocents who only want to escape from the violence and terrorism in their homelands are the real victims when they are treated like the terrorists and they are denied refuge. Apart from that, Europeans feel now invaded by the immigrants, but this is the same thing that they did in the past when they invaded other countries; most immigrants come from the countries that these world powers colonized and exploted in the first place. When England complains about Indians and France about Arabs I cannot but think, with a shade of malice, "who told them to conquer their lands in the first place?" 

Will we never be able to live in a world were we will be citizens of the world, instead of acting as these narrow-minded provincial people, refused to get out of their own confinement, closing more and more their borders instead of being open to the world? What a shameful image are creating these ultraconservative leaders for their countries, quitting the European Union, expelling immigrants, shutting out the surrounding world and dividing their own countries because they can't stand to share them with anyone who is not from their little provincial world. 

It doesn't matter, build walls around yourselves, go back to the Middle Ages, there are still some of us who do want to progress instead of going backwards, and who rather than being  devout nationalists or traitors to our country, we see the world as our own big country and in all human beings our fellow citizens of the world, and our consolation is to trust that there are still some leaders seeking union and not division in order not to repeat past mistakes, those that you make when you refuse communication, fraternity and solidarity with the rest of humanity.
