No más español en Estados Unidos

Debido al momento político que estamos viviendo con la elección de Donald Trump como presidente de Estados Unidos, me encuentro con una excelente oportunidad para discutir un tema esencial que repercute a la lengua española, y a toda la cultura hispanohablante. 

Se trata de un ejemplo desafortunado para el español de la relación entre lengua, cultura y sociedad. La noticia es la siguiente: a un par de días de la subida al poder de Trump, la Casa Blanca ha eliminado el español de sus páginas web. Sabemos muy bien que la política de Trump siempre ha estado en oposición a los inmigrantes latinos, sus palabras han generado un clima de tensión en contra de las comunidades minoritarias y esta reciente acción constituye una grosería directa contra todos los hispanos.  Después de que en su discurso en la toma de posesión, Trump dejara en claro que de ahora en adelante será "primero América"en todas sus políticas, esta acción constituye un ejemplo de ello. La tajante eliminación del español en las páginas web de la Casa Blanca tiene un mensaje muy claro: la comunidad hispana no es recibida: otro ladrillo más en el muro con el que Trump quiere dividirse de México y de esa contaminación racial que los hispanos representan para él en su país.

Diversos temas prioritarios en el gobierno de Obama han desaparecido en el gobierno de Trump: el cambio climático ya no existe, el pacto nuclear con Irán tampoco, ni las relaciones con Cuba que representaban por fin una apertura entre estos países después de tantos años de enemistad. Y ahora el español tampoco existe. 

Esta situación representa perfectamente cómo ha avanzado una política ultra conservadora, la cual ahora justificará mayor violencia contra la comunidad latina. Basta ver las actitudes que se están propiciando en varios locales comerciales, donde gente metiche en las filas del supermercado reprenden a las personas que escuchan hablando en otros idiomas que no sean inglés: "Estamos en América, habla inglés". Recientemente vi este video en Youtube donde una pareja griega-americana es molestada por una mujer que no puede soportar que hablen griego entre ellos. Es por eso que la idea de Trump de "hacer grande a América otra vez" está resultando una perfecta justificación para que haya más racismo. 

Pero algo hay que reconocer; es cierto que la inmigración ilegal es un problema importante para Estados Unidos, y aún yo como mexicano estoy de acuerdo con que Estados Unidos cierre más sus fronteras para evitar el paso de inmigrantes ilegales. También es cierto que muchos inmigrantes ilegales sucumben al crimen y a la delincuencia,  y aún los que trabajan "honradamente" no están cumpliendo con la ley americana al no contar con documentos, y no me parece bien que como mexicanos los victimicemos ya que en lugar de trabajar en nuestras tierras lo están haciendo de forma ilegal en el país vecino. A la primera dama Melania Trump se le ha acusado de ser ella misma una inmigrante en Estados Unidos; sin embargo, cuando se le ha cuestionado al respecto, ha dejado en claro que su migración a Estados Unidos fue legal y que jamás hubiera considerado la opción de llegar a Estados Unidos como inmigrante ilegal. 

El triunfo de esta derecha ultra conservadora es en cierta forma natural, y la consecuencia de una izquierda perezosa y condescendiente que no ha propuesto medidas suficientes contra las problemáticas de Estados Unidos. La contrincante de Trump en la presidencia no representaba nada nuevo, el regreso de los Clinton a la Casa Blanca no convencía a muchos, y los escándalos de los correos de Clinton, así como sus políticas dudosas, no hicieron sino repercutir gravemente en su contra. Si no, ¿de qué otra forma fue posible que un hombre como Trump, que se ha mostrado descaradamente como intolerante y abusivo, haya logrado llegar a la presidencia? 

Así que no hay que sorprendernos si ahora las fronteras de Estados Unidos se cierran más y si aumenta el racismo y la violencia contra los hispanos, como en este portazo tajante que representa la eliminación del español en las páginas oficiales del gobierno estadounidense. Lo mejor que México puede hacer es aceptar este cierre de fronteras como una oportunidad para por fin dejar de ser tan dependientes de Estados Unidos. En vez de criticar que deporten a los inmigrantes, deberíamos criticar más el hecho de que en México no haya suficientes oportunidades de empleo y de una vida digna para estas personas, que por eso se ven en la necesidad de cruzar la frontera; y si Trump quiere aislarse del mundo, será mejor que nosotros no sigamos su ejemplo y por el contrario busquemos dejar de depender tanto de nuestros vecinos mejorando nuestra economía nacional y generando acuerdos beneficiosos con otros países aparte de Estados Unidos.

No more Spanish in the United States of America 

Because of the political moment we're living with Donald Trump's election as the President of the United States, I come across an excellent opportunity to discuss an essential theme impacting the Spanish language, and all the Spanish speaking culture. 

It is an unfortunate example for Spanish about the relationship between language, culture and society. The news is the following: after a couple of days of Trump's rise to power, the White House has removed Spanish from its websites. We know well that Trump's politics have been always in opposition to Latin immigrants, his words have generated a climate of tension against minority communities and this recent action constitutes an outright rudeness against all the Hispanic people. After making clear in his Inauguration Speech that from now it will always be "America first" in all his politics, this action is an example of that. The categorical removal of Spanish in the White House websites has a very clear message: Hispanic community is not welcomed: another brick in the wall Trump wants to build to break up with Mexico and that racial contamination that Hispanics means to  him in his country.

Diverse priorities of Obama's government have disappeared in Trump's government: climate change no longer exists, nor the nuclear pact with Iran, nor the relationship with Cuba that represented at least an aperture between these countries afar so many years of enmity. And now Spanish no longer exists either.

This situation represents perfectly how an ultra conservative politic has advanced in the United States, which now will justify more violence against the Latin community. It is enough to point at the attitudes arousing in many commercial premises, where meddling people in the supermarket reprimand people for speaking other languages instead of English. "We are in America, speak English!" Recently I watched this Youtube video in which a Greek-American couple is disturbed by a woman who can't stand that they speak Greek to each other. That's why Trump's idea of "making America great again" is turning out to be a perfect justification for more racism. 

However, there is something that we must recognize, it is true that illegal immigration is a big issue for the United States, and even I as a Mexican agree with the United States closing more its borders to avoid illegal immigrants. It is also true that many illegal immigrants succumb to crime and even those who work "honestly" are not following the American law without papers, and it doesn't seem right to me that as Mexicans we victimize them since they are working illegally in the neighborhood country instead of doing so in our lands. First Lady Melania Trump has been pointed out for being an immigrant in America; however, when she has been asked in this regard, she has make it clear that her migration to the United States was legal and that she would never have considered as an option arriving to the United States as an illegal immigrant.   

The triumph of this ultra conservative right is somewhat natural, and the consequence of a lazy and condescending left that has not proposed sufficient measures against America's problems. The opponent of Trump for the presidency didn't represent anything new, the comeback of the Clintons to the White House didn't convince many, and the scandals of Clinton's mails, as well as her questionable policies, only had serious effects to her. If not, how else could it be possible that a man like Trump, who has showed himself blatantly as a bigot and a bully, has managed to win the presidency?    

So it's not surprising if now the borders of the United States are being closed more, and if racism and violence against Hispanics increases, as in that strong door shut that represents the removal of Spanish from the official websites of the American government. The best Mexico can do is to accept this closing of the borders as an opportunity to stop being so dependent on the United States at least. Instead of criticizing that the immigrants are being deported from the United States, we should criticize more the fact that in Mexico there are not enough employment opportunities and a decent standard of living for this people, since that is why they need to cross the border, and if Trump wants to isolate himself from the rest of the world, we better don't follow his example and on the contrary try to stop depending so much on our neighborhoods by improving our national economy and creating beneficial agreements with other countries besides the United States.
